PE Premium Funding

The Government gives each primary school ringfenced money to improve PE within their school. At St James Church School we will receive £19320 this academic year. The money will be used to improve PE and sport provision in our school. To decide where this money is best spent, an audit of our current provision has been carried out and areas of need identified. A plan based on the outcomes of the audit has been written which highlights the areas of need, how we are going to improve this area, how much this will cost and how we will assess the success against the outcome.

Here is a summary of how we have decided to spend our PE premium money:

The story of our spend 2024-25:

This year has been a successful one regarding moving our Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport Offer forward at St James Church School. We have been awarded the gold award for School Games as well! Below I will outline some of the ways we have used our PE and Sport Premium Funding to support these developments. At the end of my first year in the role of PE lead, I would like to share these.

Internal Sports Competitions

This year has seen the development of intra school competition across the whole school.

We have used funding to pay for Premier Sport to deliver intra school competitions across a wide range of sports including dodgeball, rounders, hockey, ball skills, cricket and football. As a result of this, all classes in KS2 have experienced house competition and the School Games Values associated with this. Additionally, all classes in KS1 have experienced a multi skills festival.

External: School based Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Year 3 and year 5 children had the amazing opportunity to learn a dance for 10 weeks and perform this at the Tacchi Morris Arts Centre. This was the first time the children have had the chance to perform on stage in front of an audience.

St James Church School have worked closely with Somerset Cricket Club. The club have delivered a block of coaching sessions for years 4 and 6.

Internal: School based Extra-Curricular Opportunities

This year we have used our funding wisely to offer a wider range of lunchtime and after school activities for our students. We have added structured activities into our lunchtime offer with a new sport the children can try. Examples have included tag rugby and basketball.

We have also used music to finish lunchtime on a Friday the children have enjoyed participating in.

Both initiatives have enabled us to increase participation levels at lunchtimes.

We have had a major focus on enhancing the quality of children’s play this year. This has led to us engaging with the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) organisation. This has been a whole school Quality Improvement Priority and as a result, the children have been more active at lunchtimes with a wider range of activity offers from structured sports and activities to free play activities and the creation of wild areas and loose parts play den building and digging. We are still developing this into next year.

This year we have also spent money on top up swimming for year 6.
