Teaching assistant (shared with Yew class) - Mrs Liddle
This is often the first thing we get asked about by parents. Homework is going to be set every Friday and the children will bring it home in paper form - it is due in the following Thursday. When homework is completed it is to be uploaded on to Class Dojo. Homework will initially comprise of times tables, spellings and reading but as we have SATS this year, more will be added. Please ask if you need any support with homework as it is an important part of your child's learning.

The children are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at home every day. Reading on a daily basis helps develop vocabulary and language skills. It enables children to learn about the world around them. It is mentally stimulating, helps improve concentration, helps develop imagination and is a really important activity to support your child to help them make good progress. The children have access to Accelerated Reader where they are set a reading target and quiz each time they have read to book to test their understanding. Each book has a set number of points that goes towards achieving their target. For those children who meet their reading target, there is a termly reward.
The children will be taught a weekly spelling rule. Spellings will be sent home based on this rule. Alongside this, children also have their award spellings and they will be tested on these each half term. There are so many fun ways to learn spellings - see the document at the bottom of the page. Here you will also find the spelling award word lists we use. It is expected that;
- by the end of Year 3 children should be able to spell all of the Bronze Spelling words
- by the end of Year 4 children should be able to spell all of the Silver Spelling words
- by the end of Year 5 children should be able to spell all of the Gold Spelling words
- by the end of Year 6 children should be able to spell all of the Platinum Spelling words
Times tables and quick recall of all times tables to 12 and associated division facts are an essential part of maths in Year 6. Times tables are practised every day in school. We follow a testing scheme that gets progressively harder and when the children pass each level they get a certificate. Quick recall is key and they have 3 minutes to complete the test - many of the tests have over 50 times tables facts to recall. Any support at home would be fantastic - there are some great apps that support learning. The children can also access Times Tables Rockstars at home where they can challenge others in the class and take timed challenges.
This term we will be looking at the human body. We will look at some of the systems and major organs of the body and conduct science experiments connected to this. We are going to focus on drawing the human body and using different materials to do this. We will use IT to research some statistics that we will use in our English writing, we are going to make some lungs and see how they physically work and then we are going to look at the physical geography of areas where humans love taking part in sport like the Alps and The Grand Canyon. Have a look at our curriculum map below to find out what we will be learning and the information the children will know and understand by the of term.
PE this half term will be on a Wednesday, so please can the children bring their kit in.
Willow Class - Autumn 1 - Thursday or Friday
Yew Class - Autumn 2 - Thursday or Friday
Children need to have wellies, trousers/ leggings, a waterproof coat, a top, a jumper and spare socks. As the weather is cooling we suggest that more layers are best. Also hats and gloves as it gets colder.
