Y4 Sorrel

Welcome to Sorrel Class!

We are a Year 4 class at St James Church School

Teacher: Miss Madelaine Glover
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Vicki Wager & Mrs Jo Hartholt

PE and Forest School:

This term we will be having PE every Monday afternoon.

Please ensure you child has their full PE kit in school for these lessons.

This year your child will be having Forest School in groups of 15 on either a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon after October half term until Christmas.

Please ensure your child has appropriate clothes to change into for this session.

This should be clothes that you do not mind getting muddy, a coat and a spare pair of shoes (preferably wellies).

If they do not have the appropriate clothing/kit/shoes they will not be able to take part in Forest School or PE.

Homework:

Homework each week will comprise of reading, practising of times tables, spellings and sometimes, exciting activities linked to our Learning Expedition.

All homework will be sent out on Fridays and will need to be uploaded to Class Dojo for marking each week.

Please ask if you need any support with homework as it is an important part of your child's learning.

Reading:

Any support that can be given at home with reading is incredibly beneficial - reading together daily, discussing new vocabulary as well as making trips to the library all help.

In Key Stage 2  pupils have access to Accelerated Reader. When a child has read their book (ideally more than once to develop their understanding),.they are able to quiz on their book in school. The percentage that they get correct shows their understanding and contributes to the average class percentage.

Each child is set a termly points target and book target and they earn points each time they pass a quiz. For those children that meet their reading target, a reading reward will take place at the end of each term.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader can only be accessed during school hours.

Times tables:

Times tables are an essential part of every child's learning.  From this academic year, the Government have now introduced a times table check at the end of year 4. It is a national expectation that children know all their times tables by the end of the year.

Times tables are practised daily in school and are tested on a Friday. The children receive a special certificate when they pass each level.

Any practice at home will really help to develop maths skills. There are many website and apps to support learning in this area. Each child has their own login details for Times Tables Rockstars which is an interactive game that helps children with their times table recall. There will be various competitions in school to motivate the children.

TT Rockstars

http://www.timestables.me.uk/ is also another great website to practise times tables. Here you can pick particular times tables and children are given an overall time instead of each question which some children prefer to practise with.

Spellings:

The children learn a new spelling pattern each week. Children are tested on their spelling patterns each week but our focus is on learning the rule and understanding of the patterns. New spellings will go home on a Friday and will be tested the following Friday.

Children also have their award spellings to work towards and they will be tested on these each half term and will be awarded a special certificate if they get them all correct.

Below are the spelling award word lists we use here at St James Church School.

It is expected that;

  • by the end of Year 3 children should be able to spell all of the Bronze Spelling words
  • by the end of Year 4 children should be able to spell all of the Silver Spelling words
  • by the end of Year 5 children should be able to spell all of the Gold Spelling words
  • by the end of Year 6 children should be able to spell all of the Platinum Spelling words

Learning Expedition:

This term our learning expedition will be focused on Marvellous Minds. The focus for this half term is the Romans and after October half term we will be focusing on other Marvellous Minds from around the world and their talents.

Have a look at our curriculum map and knowledge organiser to find out what we will be learning and the information the children will know and understand by the end of the term.
