Big Write

9:30-12:00
Introduction

Today is Big Write day!

Our text type this week is instructions.

We would like you to write a set of instructions on how to design and create a Maya mask. If you didn’t make a mask write a set of instructions for something else of your choice.

Please see the video on Dojo named ‘Big Write’ to support you with writing this and the document below named ‘Instructions and Checklist’.

Independent Activities

9:45-10:15 - Plan

Talk your learning through with an adult and plan your instructions. Think about all the steps you need to make your object and write this is bullet point form.

10:15-10:30 – Break

Have a break before you start to write your instructions, so you are ready to write – just like we do at school.

10:30-11:30 – Write

In your instructions you should include…

  • A title
  • An introduction (with a question)
  • A subtitle/subheading
  • A bullet point list
  • A subtitle/subheading
  • Step by step instructions (adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions) - make sure these are detailed enough
  • A warning
  • A conclusion

Use the document below named ‘Instructions Example & Checklist’ and the word mats below (adverbs & conjunctions) to support your writing.

11:30-12:00 – Read through & edit

Once you have finished, re-read through your writing to check it makes sense. Then look back to what we have asked you to include (above).

Now think about whether you have included the following…

  • Correct punctuation (capital letters, full stops, commas)
  • Adverbs of time at the start of each step-by-step instruction followed by a comma.
  • Adverbs of manner and place within the step-by-step instructions to add more detail.
  • Adjectives to describe nouns within the introduction, step-by-step instructions and conclusion.
  • Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating) to join sentences together within the introduction, step-by-step instructions and conclusion.

Golden Time

You have worked so hard this half term in such difficult circumstances so enjoy the afternoon doing something you enjoy!

Please see below for the additional 10-minute activities that we complete during the school day.
Spellings

If you would like to test on your Award Spellings today you can, but this is not necessary. This is because there are so many I would like you to practise them thoroughly before testing. For this reason practise these over half term and the first week back and we will test on Friday 26th February

The Award Spellings can be found here…

https://www.stjamessch.co.uk/spellings-2/

If you are not sure which Award Spellings you are on, please check with Miss Forbes or Miss Glover. Most of you are on Bronze level.

Times Tables

Our times tables practise, and test sheets can be found here…

https://www.stjamessch.co.uk/tt-rockstars-1/

Remember you have 5 minutes practise and 3 minutes if you want to test (4 minutes if you are on Olympic or Championship).

Practising on TT Rock Stars will also support your learning of times tables. Log in to try and beat your best score.
