Friday 26th February

English

9.30-10.30

Introduction

WALT write the opening of a diary entry.

Please see today’s videos on Dojo introducing the lesson.

Independent activities

Today we are writing the first two paragraphs of our diary entry.

We will pretend to be Mary Anning and use the first two drawings from our plan to help.

Have another look at the ‘Example Diary Entry’ on the Year 2 English page. We can use similar features in our diary entries. https://www.stjamessch.co.uk/english-1/

What does the opening paragraph of the diary tell you?

Today might be the day which could change our lives forever! If I am correct, then we will no longer be poor and my name will be known across the whole country!

The opening of a diary tells us the writer’s feelings about their day.

  • Summarise Mary’s feelings about the day
  • Use conjunctions to add detail
  • Could you use an exclamation mark to create an informal feel?

The second paragraph describes how events began.

  • Where was the writer? Why?
  • Expanded noun phrases to describe the setting.
  • Use some contractions and questions to make it feel chatty.

Maths

11-12

Introduction

Every other week in school we do what is called Big Book Maths. This is a reasoning/problem solving question and is often a discussion-based task. The school topic for Big Book Maths is telling the time. Have a go at the questions below.

Independent activities

Sam and Julie are friends. Both of them have rather odd clocks at home.
In Sam's bedroom there is an old alarm clock which his Dad had thrown out because it had lost its minute hand. Although it has only its small hand, Sam can still tell the time using it. He can tell the hour, such as midday. He can tell when it is time to get up, time to go to school and time to turn his light out at night.

Which clock is showing it is midday?
At what time does Sam get up?
At what time does Sam go to school?
At what time is Sam supposed to turn out his light?
