Welcome to the Holly Class page!
Teachers: Mrs Gibbs
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Polly
We are a Year 1 Class at St James Church School.
Hello and welcome to our class page. We are very excited to share our learning in school and top tips on paces to find ways to continue this learning at home.
We will have P.E every week until Easter - please ensure the children's P.E kits are in school all week.
Bug Club website: https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0
Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’
Please ensure you continue to read with your child a minimum of three times per week at home using Bug Club. Bug Club is an excellent resource that has interactive questions about the book they have just read, supporting the children's comprehension skills. Your child will also bring home a picture book of their choice to share at home and have read to them.
Class of 2018/19
Our Learning Expedition for the Summer term is 'Down at the Bottom of the Garden.' Please take a look at the curriculum overview.
Our current Learning Expedition is 'Prehistoric Adventure'. We have already begun our topic by hunting for dinosaurs in our Forest School area and learning the story 'Cave Baby'.
Holly Class will alternate PE and Forest School on a Wednesday afternoon this half term. Forest School dates are: 9th and 23rd January and 6th February.
Please ensure their named PE kit or Forest School kit (old clothes, coat and wellies) is in school on a Wednesday. If it is easier, both kits can be left in school for this half term.
11th of December 2018 - NATIVITY! The teachers are super proud of all the children for the fantastic Nativity they performed at St James Church. Here are the photos of the children in their costumes.
Share Learning Time/Continuous Provision
Before the bell goes in the morning, parents are welcome to join their child in a learning activity which includes 'Funky Fingers' activities to help develop our fine motor skills to aid handwriting. Our class are enjoying coming in to find their 'Mini-Me' picture and see what activity is waiting for them!
In Holly Class, we have begun the year with activities on Growth Mindset. We tried a challenging activity so see how well felt. Many children said they "Can't do it!" and felt frustrated. We learnt how you could change your mindset to help you learn and improve at something. Our suggestions for changing our mindset were: I CAN do this, I can't do this...yet, keep practising, learn from your mistakes, ask a friend, try a different strategy and try your best. Even after a short time practising, most of us felt we were getting better at skipping!
Learning Expedition - Autumn
Our Autumn Term Learning Expedition was 'Fire Fire!'
Please ensure you continue to read with your child a minimum of three times per week at home using Bug Club. Bug Club is an excellent resource that has interactive questions about the book they have just read, supporting the children's comprehension skills.
In Literacy we will be focusing on both fiction and non-fiction writing, improving our sentence structure, writing narratives and recount reports. This half term we will be focusing on the story 'Swimmy'.
We will be led by Alan Peat's 'Boxing Clever' to provide the structure for our stories when we have a go at creating our own. Find out more about this by clicking on this link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0Nr2psq5pA
Please keep reading story books with your child to help provide them with the inspiration, motivation and vocabulary for telling and writing their own stories.
In Maths we will be continuing to focus on place value, addition and subtraction. We will learn how to work out simple calculations and how to solve word problems. If you would like to find out more about how we teach these operations to help support your child at home please ask, we are happy to show you.
Spellings for this unit include the following letters and sounds.
The new spelling books which we handed out last term and the additional spelling activities included are already showing progress in both spelling tests and the children's daily learning. We will continue to provide you with new spelling activity ideas to carry out at home with your child and there will still be a spelling test each Friday. Thank you for your continued support with this.
