Ash
Welcome to the Ash Class Page
Teacher: Mrs Bassett
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Willcocks, Mrs Ssebugenyi and Miss Goodall
We are a Reception class at St James Church School.
Ash Class 2019/20
P.E will be on a Friday morning. Please ensure P.E kits are in school every week.
Forest School will take place every Tuesday morning. Please ensure the children have suitable footwear and clothes for this please.
Bug Club
It is expected that children will read a minimum of three times per week at home using Bug Club. Bug Club is an excellent resource that has interactive questions about the book they have just read. This supports the children's comprehension skills. If you have any questions about Bug Club please come and ask. New books will be added every Friday.
Spring Term 1 2020
AUTHOR FOCUS - We will be exploring the works of Julia Donaldson. Many of her books have also been made into BBC dramas and we will be using both of these to inspire the children's learning this half term.
Autumn Term 2019

Ash Class 2018/2019
Welcome to Summer Term 2 in Ash class. Please keep looking at this page for any updates about what will be happening this term.
Getting our Rockets to the Moon!
When the children in Ash Class challenge their brains and apply something they have learned in a purposeful way during their learning time, their rocket on our display moves towards the moon. Sometimes, the rocket even reaches the moon! When this happens, the moon landers enjoy a very special treat with Mr Eveleigh at the end of the term.
Here are Autumn term's moon landers enjoying magic stars and unicorn happy tears!
And here are Spring term's moon landers sharing shortbread and strawberry milkshake!
Finally, here are the Summer term moon landers!
Forest School and P.E.
Ash Class will be doing Forest School for the whole of the Summer Term. This will start on the Thursday 6th June and continue every Thursday until the end of term. Children will need a pair of named welly boots and some old clothes to wear. Please also ensure your child has a rain coat in school.
During this term, the children will not have P.E.
Roald Dahl
We will be having a big focus on author Roald Dahl this term. We will read chapters from his books every day, starting with 'The BFG'.
We will also be learning some of Roald's wonderful poetry too.
Throughout the term, the children will continue to engage with a multitude of texts from a range of other authors too.
We will also be having a non-fiction focus on Bees. This will be our inspiration for our Art Pastels for the exhibition (see below for details) and more poetry talk.
Maths
This term, Ash class will be working on developing their mathematical skills in a range of contexts. We will continue to have a big focus on intervention to support each child to progress and meet their own personal Early Years Goals. We will also be supporting some children to challenge their brains beyond the Early Years Curriculum and exceed their Reception targets!
Please keep an eye out for new challenges appearing in the home learning books for you to help support your child's learning at home,
Phonics
This term, the children will be continuing their Phase 4 phonics. Although this phase does not have any new sounds, the children love learning the new sight words so please do quiz the children at the end of the day to see which one we have learned.
Here's a sneaky peak at the sight words we are learning:
These sight words can also be found in your child's home learning book.
Dates for the Diary:
Monday June 3rd - Inset day
Thursday June 20th - Reception PE festival. All PE kits in school please :-)

If there is anything you are unsure about, please feel free to come and speak to a member of the Ash Class Team.
Many Thanks,
The Ash Class Team
Ash Class 2017/2018
Making our Brain Grow
This term, Ash class will continue to maintain a very positive attitude towards their learning. The children really enjoy moving their 'Challenge Rocket' towards the moon on our display every time they help themselves to learn.
Here are our successful children from last term enjoying their jam and cream scones with pink fizz. Congratulations to you all!
This term, the children who have landed on the moon will enjoy delicious milkshakes and shortbread with Mr Eveleigh!
Come in and see our ever changing 'Wall of Pride' - somewhere for the children to celebrate those 'Wow' moments!
Literacy
Ash class will begin the term by having a non-fiction text focus. We will look closely at a range of different non-fiction texts and write our own during Science week (commencing 18th June), where will will be learning all out bumble bees.
We will also continue to use Alan Peat's 'Boxing Clever' to provide the structure for our stories. Find out more about this by clicking on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0Nr2psq5pA
Please scroll down to see our Boxing Clever tool in use, less than a week after being introduced.
Please keep reading story books with your child to help provide them with the inspiration, motivation and vocabulary for telling and writing their own stories.
Maths
This term we will continue our focus on shape, space and measure, number recognition and 'calculation rather than counting'.
Please support your children to learn at home by talking to them about numbers and shapes that you find in the environment.
Phonics
Ash class will continue our phonics journey through phase 4 during Summer Term 2. There are no new sounds to learn in Phase 4 but we will concentrate on applying all of the sounds we have learnt so far by reading and writing longer and more complex words in our sentences.
The children absolutely love their phonics learning and are very happy that they will be introduced to the last of the phase 4 sight words this term (these are also sometimes also referred to as 'Tricky Words').
Please note that these words are not phonetically decodable for the children at the moment. However, they are words that are very common. Therefore, the children must learn to recognise and read them on sight.
Please support your child to read at home. If you are not sure about how to help them, please speak to a member of the Ash class team and we will be happy to support you.
Art
This term, Reception will continue to look closely at the wonderful artwork by the talented artist Phil Davies.
We went to see an exhibition of his artwork at the Brewhouse Theatre during Summer Term 1 and have since created our own artwork, inspired by his work.
We will celebrate our work as part of our contribution towards our whole school Art Exhibition that takes place on the 12th July at 3:15. I am very excited to announce that Mr Davies himself has kindly accepted our invitation to attend as our very special guest!
To visit the Phil Davies website and see more of his work please click this link: http://www.phildaviesart.com/recent-works-oil-on-canvas/
P.E.
This half term, Ash class will have Forest School on a Thursday morning.
Please make sure your child has some old clothes and
a pair of welly boots in school.
Please note: We will not be doing P.E. again this year.
If there is anything you are not sure about then please feel free to come in and book a meeting.
Thank you for your continued support
The Ash Class Team

World Book Day
As part of our 'World Book Day' celebrations (Thursday 1st March), Reception put on a wonderful production of 'The Ugly Duckling' for the rest of the school.
We loved having so many parents and carers also come to see our show. A big thanks to all who attended and stayed on after for our Early Learning Goals information sharing session too.

This is how we help our brains to grow
